I was impressed with last year&#8217;s festival, particularly with the <a title=\"Fuerzabruta @ Night Festival 2012\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ckphoto.net\/blog\/2012\/09\/fuerzabruta-night-festival-2012\">La Argentina<\/a> series of performances, and was looking forward to this year&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brasbasahbugis.sg\/SNFPortal\/\">Singapore Night Festival 2013<\/a> is billed as the largest so far, stretching from Plaza Singapura to Raffles City over the two weekends of 23 and 24th August and 30 and 31st August from 7pm to 2am.<\/p>\n<p>I was invited to the media preview which gave a whirlwind tour of the festival highlights and also revisited the actual performances over last weekend.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Everlast by Sookoon Ang<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Greeting visitors to the Singapore National Museum, under its iconic rotunda is an installation titled &#8220;Everlast&#8221; by Sookoon Ang, who is based in Singapore and France. Created with foil balloons, the work is a visual poem which is taken beyond the printed page, manifesting metaphysically and physically. The poem addresses life and death, light and lightness and speaks about the exhilarating energy and dynamics between 2 persons.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 424px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5502\/9578829187_d83602c5ed_z.jpg\" width=\"424\" height=\"640\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Everlast by Soonkoon Ang under the rotunda of the Singapore National Museum.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Vertical Extraction by Compagnie Retouramont<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dancers embark on a vertical journey up the fa\u00e7ade of the National Museum and break into a rhythmic dance on bungee cords in this site-specific performance that explores the museum\u2019s architecture and surrounding space. With the ropes as their only form of support, dancers demonstrate their acrobatic creativity and agility as they negotiate the minimalist set. With a whimsical oldtime mood, this little reverie features gypsy-swing jazz duo So Ma Fan as live accompaniment.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3733\/9578838197_92fa02e2cb_z.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"424\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The two ethereal jesters on the moon.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 424px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5491\/9601008114_d9f7f324a3_z.jpg\" width=\"424\" height=\"640\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Love at first sight?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7367\/9578842641_4be015254c_z.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"424\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The gypsy jazz swing duo, amusingly named &#8220;So Ma Fan&#8221; (Chinese for &#8220;So Troublesome&#8221;) provides the soundtrack to the performance.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Homemade: Electric Symphony Orchestra<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As a classical music fan, I am disappointed that this is not a classical orchestra with an electronic twist but more towards pop\/rock. Anyway, this was conceptualised specially for the Singapore Night Festival 2013 and brought to fruition by Ewan A.S. and Syed Ahmad. This 20 strong orchestra features a strings section, two drummers, a turntablist, a horns section, two guitarist and a bassist, and aims to be Singapore\u2019s first \u201crock\u201d orchestra.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5453\/9581635932_a6f1e7a9bb_z.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"424\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The brass and winds section.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3749\/9581636276_648f406746_z.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"424\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Backup singers and string section.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 424px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5480\/9578848639_8b2a5dcdaa_z.jpg\" width=\"424\" height=\"640\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lead singer\/guitarist.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 424px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7327\/9578850499_ec36f992d7_z.jpg\" width=\"424\" height=\"640\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The saxophonist with a silver lining.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And finally,<\/p>\n<p><strong>Absolut Canvas<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With its iconic silhouette and its collaborations with some of the most recognisable artists and designers, ABSOLUT has cemented itself as the perfect canvas for creative ideas to flourish.\u00a0ABSOLUT CANVAS showcases the ways in which artists and designers have used the ABSOLUT bottle as a channel for their creativity. The exhibition features\u00a0beautifully designed bottles as well as an interactive area where visitors will get to unleash their own creativity.
