{"id":50,"date":"2010-05-14T21:32:09","date_gmt":"2010-05-14T13:32:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ckphoto.net\/blog\/?p=50"},"modified":"2011-01-13T23:04:58","modified_gmt":"2011-01-13T15:04:58","slug":"invitation-to-dream-a-fire-garden-installation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.ckphoto.net\/blog\/2010\/05\/invitation-to-dream-a-fire-garden-installation","title":{"rendered":"Invitation to Dream \u2013 A Fire Garden Installation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This year&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/singaporeartsfest.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Singapore Arts Festival<\/a> opens with programme called &#8220;Invitation to Dream &#8211; A Fire Garden Installation&#8221; by the French\u00a0\u00a0fire alchemist, Compagnie Carabosse. Spanning across the historic sites of the Esplanade Park and Empress Place, it consists of several contraptions of towering sculptures of metal, clay pots, fire curtains, blazing garlands and intricate patterns of flame.<\/p>\n<p>Armed with only my trusty Panasonic Lumix LX3,\u00a0I was there with my friend <a href=\"http:\/\/photographer-on.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">David<\/a> and YS to shoot the event. Firepots are placed on the metal rings. In the background are the Esplanade, the Singapore Flyer and the hotels.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Right outside the Asian Civilisations Museum at Empress Place, there are the Meli Melos. These are a series of circular metal structures which spin slowly in different ways. Firepots are attached to each circle measuring 4.5m tall.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4043\/4608924468_bafd2a4fb2_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Meli Melos<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At one end of the Cavanagh Bridge, we see the Stovepipe. The operator slowly lowers the pipe into the burning pot of parrifin wax by turning the wheel, and after a small wait, he raises it, whereupon there is a small &#8220;explosion&#8221; and smoke which comes up from the pipe. Quite a impressive sight to see, but unfortunately it&#8217;s something which is hard to capture.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 427px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm2.static.flickr.com\/1044\/4608317921_714c5c8032_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"427\" height=\"640\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Stovepipe and operator<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a close-up of the operator. As there was not much lighting, I was forced to use ISO 1600 on the Panasonic Lumix LX3, which gave kind of a noisy picture. Therefore, I decided to give it the B&amp;W treatment.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm2.static.flickr.com\/1189\/4608922872_0650b6610a_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"640\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Stovepipe Operator<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Still at Empress Place, we have these burning charcoal balls suspended above the ground.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4024\/4608318193_9b731305f2_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Charcoal Balls<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Finally, the &#8220;Forest of Vests&#8221;, which looks like a whole &#8220;forest&#8221; of singlets.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4023\/4608318351_c40c2b8d15_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Forest of Vests<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There are a few more similar installations which I did not shoot\/post. Overall, I kind of enjoyed the installation although it made the already hot and humid Singapore weather worse off.
